Paola Reichenbach is Director of research of the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Her research activities are mainly focused on the temporal and spatial evaluation and modelling of geo-hydrological process at different scales in different geo-environmental settings. Her research interests include: (i) landslide identification and mapping in different morphological, structural, and climatic environments, including the production of event inventory maps and of multi-temporal landslide maps; (ii) analysis of landslide types and patterns in relation to the geological setting and the type of trigger (rainfall, earthquake); (iii) methods for landslide susceptibility, hazard and risk assessment, exploiting GIS technology and statistical tools; (iv) spatially distributed rock fall modelling for hazard assessment. Her research activities are finalized to prepare impacted scientific publications, that have been carried out in collaborations with colleagues from different national and international institutions (in Europe, Usa, Israel). She supervised/co-supervised different national and international internships, scholarships and fellowships and PhD and MSc theses (i.e., a Marie Curie Initial Training Network). She participated and coordinated projects, WPs and Tasks activities under national and international projects. She has organized/co-organized sessions at national and international meetings (i.e., EGU and AGU). In 2021 she was awarded by the Varnes Medal provided by the International Consortium on Landslides.

I conduct a multidisciplinary research in the area of Geographical Information Science, investigating the interactions and coexistence of human and physical environments under climate change conditions, analyzing large, high-dimensional and spatially distributed data.

My research, shaped by data driven approaches and prediction modelling, focuses on spatio-temporal analyses. It links environmental hazards exposure and vulnerability, the study of climate change effects and adaptation, especially in urban environments, and the managerial implications of geographical analyses within the decision-making process.

My group has been conducting research in physical geography, mainly geomorphology and hydrology. We often use geographical information systems (GIS) as our main analytical tool. We conduct research at an international level. Areas recently studied include East Asia, Italy, Syria and the UK. Our major research topics are rivers, alluvial fans, hillslopes, riverine water quality, surveying, and geoarchaeology. Currently, ongoing projects include 1) research on increased rainfall and landslide hazards in Japan in response to global warming; 2) investigation of sediment delivery after volcanic eruption at Vesuvius in Italy and Pinatubo in the Philippines; and 3) GIS analysis of water quality data in British and Japanese watersheds.
